One of my goals this year (every year!) is to get better at memorizing scripture.
And if I’m honest, it feels like every year I fail.
Ugh!
May is almost over and guess how many new verses I’ve memorized this year–FOUR! Although, I hesitate to even count those because I only memorized them by accident while helping my boys memorize scripture for Sunday school!
Why do I find it so difficult to stick with this goal? Do you struggle to memorize scripture like I do?
Because of my personality type (ENFP), I get more motivated by the WHY than the HOW
For years I have been searching for the best method of memorizing scripture and believe me, I have tried EVERY SINGLE WAY! I have a whole Pinterest board dedicated to scripture memorization for goodness sakes! Now I’ve come to realize that I need to articulate and understand WHY it is important to memorize scripture. What does the Bible say about it?
After much research through the Bible and the internet, I compiled a list of 7 important reasons to memorize scripture. Just know that there are so many more reasons–but these are the ones that seemed most important for my journey.
Feel free to leave a comment and let me know if missed any reasons.
7 Reasons Why You Need To Memorize Scripture
1. Protects You from Sin
“I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” (Psalm 119:11 NLT)
2. Tames Your Tongue
“A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart.” (Luke 6:45 NLT)
3. Gives You a Hunger for Spiritual Growth
“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” (Romans 12:2 NLT)
4. Helps You Confidently Guide Others to Christ
“Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it.” (1 Peter 3:15 NLT)
5. You Will Receive Spiritual Direction
“Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.” (Psalm 119:105 NLT)
6. Gives You a Powerful Weapon Against Spiritual Attacks
“Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” (Ephesians 6:13-17 NLT)
7. It Will Make You Happy
“When I discovered your words, I devoured them. They are my joy and my heart’s delight, for I bear your name, O Lord God of Heaven’s Armies.” (Jeremiah 15:16 NLT)

Memorizing scriptures is very helpful. It reminds us about what we need to do if we are in a situation. I also have a problem with it though but I just try and try until I get it.
The only one I have been able to memorize so far is:
Lord let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love for I have put my trust in you”.
The hardest part for me is trying to remember which Psalm / Book and actual chapter verse scriptures are from…I’d like to try though.
